Vogt Engineering Supports CISD Project Mentor

Jan 13, 2023

The word “mentor” has roots dating back to the 8th century - from the character named Mentor in Homer’s Odyssey. The personal name Mentor has been adopted in Latin and other languages, including English, as a term meaning someone who imparts wisdom to and shares knowledge with a less-experienced person.

National Mentoring Month is recognized in January and is a perfect time to incorporate cultivating new relationships that support and nurture the youth in our community. According to MENTOR, 1 in 3 young people in America are growing up without a mentor outside their family. By volunteering to be a mentor, we have an opportunity to provide a valuable friendship while supporting growth.

Project Mentor connects community members with Conroe ISD students to foster meaningful relationships that promote positive youth development so that students can successfully navigate school and life.

The CISD mentoring program uses traditional one-on-one mentoring by matching a mentee (student) and mentor (community volunteer) during school hours.

Rachel Gentry, one of the facilitators of CISD’s Project Mentor, says “Mentoring is a way to support the next generation of leaders. By connecting young people with caring adults, we promote academic success, participation in extra-curriculars and explore new opportunities. Project Mentor currently serves 9 campuses in the Conroe Feeder Zone where there is currently a waitlist of about 40 students. You can help close the mentoring gap by volunteering to mentor one of them. Additionally, we are excited to be expanding the program to Caney Creek Feeder Zone soon.”

Statistics compiled by MENTOR show mentoring has tangible effects. With a mentor, young people are:

  • 52% less likely to skip a day of school.
  • 78% more likely to volunteer regularly in their communities.
  • 130% more likely to hold a leadership position in a club or sports team.

This National Mentoring Month, join Vogt Engineering in committing to encourage, motivate, and strengthen mentorship for our youth by volunteering for CISD Project Mentor. The next training class will be held on Wednesday, February 8, 2023. Visit their website to learn more and fill out this form to register for the next training.

May is National Bike Month, but Vogt Engineering celebrates and encourages biking all year. Our team enjoys using our office bikes to get out and experience nature, taking advantage of our central location in The Woodlands Town Center. About National Bike Month National Bike Month, after many previous iterations, was officially established in 1956. Today, National Bike Month is sponsored by the League of American Bicyclists , which incorporates accessible ways to start biking by hosting smaller experiences such as National Bike to Work Week (usually held the third week of May), and Bike to Work Day (usually that Friday). Health Benefits According to the Harvard School of Public Health , biking can help “improve mental health by lowering stress levels and stimulating feel-good endorphins.” Other health benefits include: improved cardiovascular fitness stronger muscles greater coordination and general mobility reduced body fat Vogt's Commitment to our Team and the Environment One of Vogt Engineering’s major considerations when looking for an office was easily accessible trails for riding bikes and walking. We are fortunate to have found a great place to be with our great team of people. Not only is biking and being outdoors good for mental and physical health, but we value working with the environment in everything we do. Although many civil engineering projects require earth movement, Vogt is committed to finding solutions that complement the natural surroundings of the site. Get Involved There are many local entities that organize Bike Month events, including The Woodlands, Harris County Precinct 3 (at Burroughs Park), and more.
